800 Blackburn Point Road, Osprey, FL
Blackburn Point Park is an existing 4-acre water access park. A portion of the existing park is located just east of the historic swing bridge on the south side of Blackburn Point Road. This area has historically been known as "Fisherman's Island." Additional park areas are located on the west side of the historic bridge on the north side of Blackburn Point Road.
Existing recreational opportunities include non-motorized boating, fishing and picnicking.
In January 2006, Sarasota County purchased approximately 11-acres to add to the existing park. The county was awarded a Florida Communities Trust (FCT) grant toward the purchase of this additional parkland.
Parks and Recreation has worked collaboratively with various stakeholders in the development of the park concept plan
. The Sarasota County Commission reviewed, provided additional suggestions and approved the concept plan in June 2008.
Since this time, Public Works has led the design, engineering and permitting for the enhancement of the park.
Additional park amenities will include:
2-lane motorized boat ramp,
picnic areas, playground and
environmental mitigation and enhancements.
Design work is anticipated to be completed this year (2013). Construction of the additional park amenities is expected to begin in the Spring of 2014 and will be completed in phases as funding allows.
