Transportation Planning

Transportation Planning is responsible for guiding the development, improvement, and oversight of the county's transportation system to ensure it meets the community's current and future needs. Transportation Planning plans for long-range transportation improvements, analyzes travel trends and growth patterns, designs and manages infrastructure projects, and coordinates with local, regional, and state partners to advance mobility initiatives. It also administers regulations and development review processes to ensure that new development complies with transportation standards and supports a safe, efficient, and connected network for motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit users. Through these efforts, staff help to balance growth with sustainability, safety, and accessibility while enhancing the overall quality of life for Sarasota County residents and visitors.

Comprehensive Plan – Element 4 (Mobility)

The Mobility Element of the Sarasota County Comprehensive Plan defines the Goals, Objectives, and Policies that guide future mobility for the County’s residents, businesses, and visitors.

Future Thoroughfare Plan

The Future Thoroughfare Plan is a core component of the Transportation Chapter of the County’s Comprehensive Plan. It serves as the official long-range blueprint governing the framework, classification, and future physical dimensions of the county's primary roadway network.

The Future Thoroughfare map designates the functional classification of existing primary roads and identifies future corridors that need to be built or expanded to accommodate projected travel demand.

This county-run program promotes alternative transportation modes, healthy lifestyles, and safe communities through outreach and educational events throughout the County.
The program has hosted bike rodeos, repair clinics, skills courses, and group rides to promote alternative modes of transportation.
The Ride and Stride program also encourages safety by hosting in-person helmet-fitting events and distributing bicycle and walking safety items such as lights, helmets, and bike bells.
