Sarasota County's Professional Engineer Development Program (PEDP) is a 4-year employment experience for recent engineering graduates interested in becoming in becoming a Professional Engineer (PE). 

The purpose of Sarasota County's PEDP is to provide engineering graduates with experience in the fields of Civil and Environmental engineering, while supporting the county's mission and vision, leading to registration as a licensed PE in the State of Florida.

The PEDP provides new engineers the opportunity to rotate through various disciplines based on organizational needs, individual preferences, backgrounds and specialized traits.

 Successful completion of the PEDP requires a combination of on-the-job activities and formal training be completed during the program's 4-year duration. Additionally, the PEDP trainee must pass both the FE and PE exams.

Why join the PEDP?

Join the PEDP to experience on-the-job training in multiple engineering positions while gaining a better understanding of how engineering positively impacts your community. In the PEDP, you will be receiving full-time pay and county benefits while working in a supportive environment.

 

What are the current position rotations?

PEDP members will select four 1-year rotations from Sarasota County's continuously growing list of participating engineering positions.  Current rotations include:

  • Stormwater/Transportation Design (Project Management),

  • Stormwater/Transportation Construction (Project Management),

  • Utilities Design (Project Management),

  • Utilities Planning,

  • Traffic Operations,

  • Stormwater,

  • Transportation Planning,

  • Road and Bridge.

 

What engineering disciplines should apply to the PEDP?

The PEDP will provide experience focused mainly in the fields of Civil Engineering (roads, bridges and sewer systems) and Environmental Engineering (wastewater treatment, drinking water treatment and solid waste management).  Any recent engineering graduate with an interest in civil service will benefit from working as part of the team at Sarasota County Government.
