Transportation plans, builds and manages Sarasota County’s transportation infrastructure. This framework of trails, roads, and bridges form the foundation for the community’s quality of life. 

Transportation's Divisions Summary of Services:

Transportation: Planning, engineering, regulation and administration County's public transportation infrastructure. 

Transportation Planning makes state and federal funding requests, calculates fee amounts for commercial development and prioritizes use of these funds. This group is also responsible for bicycle, pedestrian and trails coordination.

Field Services: Operation and maintenance of the County's public transportation infrastructure. 

Field Services is the largest of the four divisions, making up 80% of the department’s staff. Its Road and Bridge team manages and maintains roads, bike lanes, curbs, bridges, sidewalks, hand and guardrails; trims and maintains 59,000 street trees in medians and right of way, mows over 2,800 acres monthly along county rights of way, and landscapes or mows 300 medians in the county right of way.

Its Traffic Operations team manages more than 47,000 road signs and markings, 273 signalized intersections, rapid flashing beacons for crosswalks, hawk signals, and The Legacy Trail crossings, all county school zones and 7,048 streetlights and special lighting districts. In 2024, the team maintained 2,405 lane miles of county roads and manages 137+ bridges. 

Business Administration: Departmental general administration, strategic planning coordination, budget, finance, contracting, procurement and public improvement districts.
