Stormwater Smart Yards
Making your yard stormwater smart means reducing and improving stormwater runoff to prevent erosion and protect water quality by limiting pollutants entering nearby waterways.
Stormwater Ponds
Stormwater ponds are an important part of the stormwater system. They are man-made structures designed to reduce flooding and filter pollutants from runoff generated in neighborhoods before its released downstream. Most stormwater ponds are connected to downstream waters through pipes, canals, or creeks. Even ponds that are not directly connected to surface waters still contribute to groundwater recharge, which can eventually flow underground to creeks and bays.
Since the 1980s, stormwater ponds have been required in most new developments under modern stormwater regulations to manage runoff from developed land and improve water quality.
Storm Drains
Storm drains are a part of the stormwater system and connect directly to our waterways.
Grass clippings, leaves, and other yard waste blown into streets can clog storm drains, causing local flooding and add excess nutrients to our waterways, which can lead to algal blooms and fish kills.
Remember, only rain down the drain!
Illicit Discharges & Proper Disposal of Pollutants
What is an illicit discharge? Anything that enters the stormwater system that is not solely rainwater. County code prohibits illicit discharges.
