The Repetitive Loss Area Analysis Project
Following the guidelines in the 2017 Community Rating System (CRS) Manual, Sarasota County in conjunction with Weiler Engineering, Corp. has a County-wide Repetitive Loss Area Analysis (RLAA). This resulted in a final report that gave us a better idea of why certain areas flood, what methods of protection may be suited for a specific area, and what potential mitigation measures may be out there to reduce future flooding. Potential FEMA federal grant programs have been identified as well.
A Repetitive Loss Property (RLP) is identified through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The RLP has two or more flood insurance claims of more than $1,000 paid within any 10-year period since 1978.
What Is a Repetitive Loss Area Analysis (RLAA)?
The RLAA is a detailed mitigation plan for a Repetitive Loss Area. A Repetitive Loss Area will typically have a Repetitive Loss structure (or structures) along with other homes that have similar construction and similar flood exposure. This approach ensures we look at all the homes in these areas with the same potential risk.
This analysis will help the county and property owners identify why repetitive flooding is occurring and will look at any opportunities to reduce the flood risk.
What Our Goal Is:
To reduce and/or eliminate repetitive flooding creating a safer environment for our citizens and reducing future flood insurance claims. Almost one-fourth of all NFIP payments, since 1978, have been to Repetitive Loss Properties (RLPs).
Where Are We Now?
The current RLAA is being implemented and staff continues to update the required annual reports.
