Notice of Construction at the Central County Solid Waste Disposal Complex (Sarasota County Landfill)

Beginning August 20, 2026, the Central County Solid Waste Disposal Complex (CCSWDC) will begin a major improvement project that is expected to continue through Summer 2027.

This project will include the addition of one inbound lane and scale, one outbound lane, a new bypass exit lane, and new internal roadways to improve traffic flow, enhance customer access, and provide a more efficient and convenient experience for all customers.    

During construction, customers should expect:

• Periodic traffic delays
• Temporary traffic pattern changes
• Reduced speeds through the construction area
• Possible lane closures or brief disruptions as work progresses

The facility will remain open during construction, and every effort will be made to minimize impacts to customers while work is underway.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we complete these important improvements. Once finished, these upgrades will provide safer access, increased capacity, and faster service for customers visiting the Central County Solid Waste Disposal Complex.

Effective April 1, 2026, a surcharge will be automatically applied to all electronic payments made to Solid Waste under Resolution No. 2025-165.

• Credit card: 2.45% per transaction (minimum $1.00) (online or in-person)
• $0.45 flat fee for eCheck/ACH (electronic bank transfers) (available online only for APA customers)

Payments made by physical check or cash can be made with no additional fees applied.

Residential and Commercial Garbage

• Garbage is collected from more than 150,000 residential units and from 6,000+ commercial customers through franchise agreements. The residential collection program in unincorporated Sarasota County is supported by non ad-valorem assessments on all real properties:

Recycling

Recycling is mandatory in Sarasota County.

• Residential curbside recycling is collected by Waste Pro of Florida, Inc. and FCC Environmental Services of Florida, LLC and processed under a contract with Single Stream Recyclers.
• Residents living in unincorporated Sarasota County that need a new single-stream recycling cart (new home build, damaged cart, etc.) should contact the appropriate service provider based on service area*:
  •  North Service Area – Waste Pro of Florida, Inc. at 941-340-0700
  • South Service Area – FCC Environmental of Florida, LLC at 941-557-5040
• Businesses may contract services with a vendor of their choice and pay for service directly to the franchise hauler. Costs tend to vary depending on level of service needed.

Hazardous Waste

Florida Statutes and Landfill Operating Permits mandate the collection of certain waste streams.

• The purpose of the household hazardous waste programs is to provide a safe solution for household hazardous waste processing rather than disposal.

Landfill

The Central County Solid Waste Disposal Complex (CCSWDC) is located in Nokomis and accepts residential and commercial garbage from the unincorporated areas of Sarasota and from three municipalities (cities of North Port, Sarasota and Venice).

• The CCSWDC includes a scale house, a Citizens' Convenience Center, a construction and demolition debris recycling facility, a yard waste processing area, tire processing area, white goods (scrap metal) area and other landfill operations support facilities.
• Landfill operations are funded by the tipping fees collected for processing and/or disposal of materials received.
• Sarasota County Solid Waste offers landfill customers a fast and easy service to make convenient and secure online credit card payments.

• NOTE: All customers unloading items by hand must arrive at least 30 minutes prior to closing. 

Hours of Operation

Garbage, recycling and yard waste collection schedule:

Curbside collection will run as follows: 

• Monday, Sept.7: No Collection.

Since the holiday falls on Monday, trash, recycling and yard waste will be collected one day later than the regularly scheduled pickup day for the rest of the week. 

• Tuesday, Sept. 8: Collection for Monday customers. 
• Wednesday, Sept. 9: Collection for Tuesday customers. 
• Thursday, Sept. 10: Collection for Wednesday customers. 
• Friday, Sept. 11: Collection for Thursday customers. 
• Saturday, Sept. 12: Collection for Friday customers.  The Central County Landfill will remain open until 4:30 p.m. but Construction Debris will close at 1:30 p.m. 

Regular collection days resume the following Monday 

• Bee Ridge Chemical Collection Center (North)

          The Bee Ridge Chemical Collection Center, administrative office and The Re-Uz-It Shop at 8750 Bee Ridge Road will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7.

• Venice Chemical Collection Center (South)

           The Venice Chemical Collection Center at 250 S. Jackson Road will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7. 

• Landfill (Central County)

           The Central County Landfill and the administrative office at 4000 Knights Trail Road will be closed on Monday, Sept. 7.

HOLIDAYS: All facilities are closed on New Year's Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. If the observed holiday falls on a weekday, disposal operations (except for C&D) and the Citizens' Convenience Center will remain open until 5 p.m. on Saturday following the holiday. North and south facilities are also closed on government holidays.
