Sarasota County Public Utilities operates three regional water reclamation facilities (WRFs) treating millions of gallons of wastewater daily. Wastewater from homes and businesses is pumped to the wastewater treatment plants through an underground network of pipes and lift stations. All county treatment plants are regulated by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

The plants produce highly treated reclaimed water used for irrigation on golf courses, right of ways and residential lawns. Reclaimed water goes through many levels of treatment to make it safe to use for irrigation purposes. The use of the reclaimed water is beneficial to county residents because it reduces the impact on the county’s drinking water sources.

To improve the quality of the county’s reclaimed water facilities’ output, the county has implemented plans to upgrade the WRFs into advanced wastewater treatment (AWT) facilities that require a more stringent treatment process. The advanced wastewater treatment process will incorporate treatment to remove nutrients, nitrogen and phosphorus.

The first Sarasota County WRF to convert to an AWT will be the Bee Ridge facility. Once upgraded to AWT standards, facilities produce cleaner reclaimed water with lower concentrations of unwanted nutrients.

Wastewater FAQs

Sarasota County Public Utilities has a team of staff who work on the wastewater collection system 24/7. Tasks can include replacing aging pipes, conducting closed-circuit television (CCTV) inspections of sewer lines (proactively videoing the inside of pipes), and cleaning the inside of pipes in areas that experience recurring clogs or buildup of fats, oils, and grease (FOG). Staff also respond to service requests or concerns that arise within the community, such as a manhole issue or potential spill in the area. This team is the “boots on the ground,” ensuring that the community has access to the best possible wastewater services. To learn more about this team and how you can help, check out the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) below.

Why is the wastewater team at my residence?
You can recognize Sarasota County Public Utilities staff in your area by their white branded vehicles and branded protective gear. If you see staff at or near your residence and you have not received a door hanger or postcard explaining a project or proactive work being done in your area, this is likely due to a reported incident within the wastewater system or a service request being addressed. Please be assured that the team is there to ensure wastewater services are provided to our community effectively.
What does the wastewater team do?
Sarasota County Public Utilities’ wastewater team has a field operations division that makes repairs and improvements to our community’s infrastructure to ensure the health and safety of residents. They handle issues such as sanitary sewer overflows, infrastructure breaks, cleaning and televising wastewater mains, smoke testing, and more. They also perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and repairs on lift stations as needed.
If I need service, how long can I expect to wait?
Our wastewater team responds to all emergencies based on priority. Customers may be contacted by a wastewater employee when we receive a call to gather additional information, if necessary, and to provide an estimated arrival time. Most service request inspections are completed the same day. If repairs are needed, they are scheduled based on severity.
What should I do if I see staff in my area?
Please understand that field operations staff may be occupied responding to an emergency. Sarasota County Public Utilities Customer Service is happy to answer any questions you may have at 311 or 941-861-6790.

Public Utilities staff were cleaning sewer lines on my street, and now there is an odor inside my home. What should I do?

During sewer cleaning, Sarasota County’s combination vacuum trucks use high-pressure water hoses to clear the pipe and draw debris back into the vacuum tube placed in the manhole. During this process, P-traps may be drawn dry, which can cause sewer odors. P-traps are mechanisms on sinks, showers, and other interior plumbing fixtures that prevent odors from entering the home. To eliminate odors, run water through all sinks and showers in the home to refill the P-traps.

What is the white “candy cane” pipe in my yard?

This pipe is there to protect your internal plumbing. It is curved at the top to prevent rainwater and debris from entering the pipe.

What are staff doing at the lift stations?

Lift stations are maintained regularly through monthly and annual preventative maintenance. Staff at these stations ensure that pumps are clean and function properly, and that electrical panels controlling these pumps are in good working condition.

How do I know the wastewater department is cleaning the sewer in my area?
During routine cleaning, you will receive a door hanger notifying you of sewer cleaning occurring in your area. During emergency cleaning, you may not receive notice, as crews are working quickly to return the system to normal working condition as soon as possible. For questions, please contact the Sarasota County Public Utilities Customer Service team at 311 or 941-861-6790.
How do I know if a wastewater spill has occurred in my area?

Wastewater spills, known as sanitary sewer overflows, are reported to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Pollution notices can be viewed online. In the spirit of maintaining transparency with the community, Sarasota County also posts all spills, regardless of size, to Facebook to notify the community. If you think a spill may have occurred, you can check either of these sources for more information. For questions, please contact the Sarasota County Public Utilities Customer Service team at 311 or 941-861-6790.

How can I submit a service request?

To ensure that your request reaches the appropriate subject-matter expert, please call 311 or 941-861-6790. Field Operations staff may not be the appropriate subject-matter experts, as the county provides many services to residents. Once our customer service team receives the request, it will be routed appropriately and prioritized accordingly.
