During busy holiday weekends, look for the yellow pack-in/pack-out bags located at county beaches and parks, and put litter in its place. This helps keep our beautiful natural areas clean and our wildlife safe.

Cigarette Litter Prevention Program

In 2017, Keep Sarasota County Beautiful received a $5,000 grant from Keep America Beautiful that funded the installation of more than 30 customized sidewalk “butt-ler” units on Siesta Key. The units provide patrons with an easy disposal method for cigarette butts.

During that spring, “butt-ler” units collected close to 4,000 cigarette butts and cigar tips. After 10 weeks, litter amounts decreased by approximately 30%. By June 2018, cigarette litter had decreased by 78%.

In the fall of 2018, KSCB installed 40+ additional units in other parks, beaches and natural areas, resulting in a decrease of cigarette butt litter throughout county venues.

Free Portable Ashtrays

Cigarette butts are the world's largest environmental litter problem, clogging our stormwater drains and polluting our beaches and bays. Most come from drivers disposing of their butts on the road. In Sarasota County, cigarette butts are the single largest source of litter.

Using portable ashtrays keeps our roadways, beaches and waterways clean for current and future generations. Request your free portable ashtray online.
