Overview

The West Coast Inland Navigation District, or WCIND, is a multi-county special taxing authority encompassing Charlotte, Lee, Manatee, and Sarasota counties. Established by the Florida Legislature in 1947 to complement the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with the construction and maintenance of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, or ICW. The District’s mission is to preserve and enhance the commercial, recreational, and ecological values of local waterways. To support the mission, the WCIND provides Waterway Development Program funding through its member counties, at the discretion of each county. Sarasota County hosts an annual (on-cycle) grant program to provide funding to local organizations and county departments for eligible activities.
