Integrated Pest Management

"Integrated Pest Management" or "IPM" is a series of strategies or tools to manage pests using sustainable methods. IPM is an important part of Mosquito Management, and following IPM guidelines helps reduce chemical usage overall.

Want to know more about IPM practices? Visit the UF/IFAS Integrated Pest Management page.

Adulticiding

Adulticides are pesticides that target the adult life cycle stage of an insect, in this case mosquitoes. Adulticide products used by Mosquito Management are registered and approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

For more information on adulticides, visit: https://www.cdc.gov/mosquitoes/mosquito-control/adulticides.html

Larviciding

Larvicides are products used to kill the immature larval stage of the mosquito life cycle. These stop mosquitoes from reaching adulthood. Larvicides are applied to water or intermittently flooded areas, are are EPA-registered and approved.

For more information on larvicides, visit: https://www.cdc.gov/mosquitoes/mosquito-control/larvicides.html

Check out the dropdown menu below to see some of our non-chemical larvicides used!

Insect Growth Regulators (IGRS)

Insect growth regulators (IGRS) mimic natural juvenile hormones in young insects and disrupt insects growth and other life processes. It is absorbed by the cuticle (larval exoskeleton) or ingested. The only IGRS products registered for use in Florida are methoprene, pyriproxyfen, and diflubenzuron. We use an EPA-registered and approved product called Altosid.

Bacterial Larvicides

The strain Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bt or Bti) for short, is a bacteria found in soil. This bacteria, when consumed by mosquito larvae, releases microscopic spores into the gut. These spores create a toxin which causes the mosquito larvae to stop eating which makes them starve and die.

Bti is only effective against larvae and must be applied to water, but is fast-acting and environmentally friendly. The bacteria is safe for plants, animals, and humans when used as directed. Mosquito Management regularly treats standing water using Bti, which helps to reduce adulticiding chemical use. Homeowners can purchase Bti at most home improvement retailers for regular mosquito prevention around their homes.

Oils and Films

Oils and films (monomolecular surface films) are used to target the final immature stage of the mosquito life-cycle before they can become biting adults: pupa.

Mineral oils formulated to dissolve quickly can be used to suffocate pupa when they try to breathe along the water surface.

Caution is advised that for plant-dwelling mosquito larvae and pupae control, some mineral oils may damage plant material. Following the label, test a mineral oil before directly applying into or near aquatic plants.

Natural Predators

Mosquitofish are a natural predator of mosquito larvae and pupae. These little fish are a native, natural form of larval control that, yes, count as a larvicide!
