Why does Mosquito Management exist?
Sarasota County Mosquito Management is dedicated to protecting and promoting public health by managing mosquito populations through environmentally sound and fiscally responsible practices.
Around 700,000 people die from mosquito borne illness or infection annually. They live almost everywhere, and Florida is home to around 80 mosquito species.
Mosquito Management was voted into existence by the citizens of Sarasota County in 1940. Sarasota County’s health, economy, and development is impacted by mosquito populations, including those of health importance.
Definitions
aka "IPM" which uses a variety of techniques to manage or control a pest, including biological, physical, and other means.
ULV - Stands for an "Ultra-Low Volume" application used for insecticides. This rate is equal to about 1 teaspoon or 0.0013 gallons per acre.
Arbovirus - Any virus that is transmitted by certain species of blood-feeding arthropods including mosquitoes.
Pesticide - A chemical or non-chemical substance used to kill, repel, or control pests. Pesticides for insects may be specified as insecticides.
Adulticide - An insecticide designed to kill insects that have reached their adult stage.
Larvicide - An insecticide that is specifically targeted against the larval life stage of an insect.

No, an aerial or ground mission cannot be requested by an individual. Instead, a citizen request will lead typically to an inspection of the area, including a review of current surveillance in that area that may already be occurring.
If the data supports a mission, one will be planned for that evening.
