Meet Evan Crisp

Being a camp counselor is more than just a summer job for Evan, it’s a way to give back to the program that helped shape his childhood. He grew up attending Sarasota County camps, making some of his closest friends through its programs. As soon as he was old enough, Evan became a Counselor-in-Training, eager to work his way up and help create the same unforgettable experiences for the next wave of campers.

Now, as a Camp Counselor, Evan assists with daily camp operations, leading games, arts and crafts, field trips and special events. He works to create a positive environment where every camper feels encouraged to learn something new. More than just supervising activities, he helps kids build confidence, develop teamwork skills and form friendships — just as he did years ago.

One of the most rewarding parts of the job for Evan is teaching kids a new sport and watching their confidence grow as they improve. Seeing a camper go from hesitant to excited after learning a new skill reminds him why he loves this work. “Camp is a great place for kids to make new friends and learn how to play a new sport,” Evan said. “It’s very rewarding to help kids learn and improve through different activities.”

Evan’s passion for working with kids extends beyond camp, he’s currently in school to become a teacher. Every day at camp gives him valuable hands-on experience, reinforcing his commitment to education and mentorship. His journey from camper to counselor is a testament to the lasting impact of summer camp, and now, he’s paying it forward, helping create lifelong memories and lessons for the next generation.

Meet Tammy Owens

As a Housing Recovery Project Manager for the Resilient SRQ team, Tammy is dedicated to helping residents rebuild their lives after Hurricane Ian. She ensures that homeowners affected by the storm have access to the resources they need to rebuild their homes and regain stability. Resilient SRQ is Sarasota County’s program for its allocation of Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Of the $201.5 million CDBG-DR funds awarded to Sarasota County by HUD, $55 million is dedicated to the Housing Recovery Program, which is a lifeline for those working to recover from the storm’s devastation.

Tammy plays a central role in guiding residents through the recovery process. She oversees the allocation of funds and works closely with local agencies, contractors and community organizations to streamline the approval process for rebuilding projects. By coordinating resources, Tammy helps ensure that repairs and new construction projects meet the funding criteria and are completed as efficiently as possible.

Her role goes far beyond coordinating resources — Tammy is a compassionate advocate for every resident she serves. She helps residents navigate the often-complicated steps of applying for funding and ensures they understand their options. With her expertise and problem-solving skills, she connects people with the right resources, offering them the clarity and confidence they need to move forward. “I genuinely love helping people. If I could help the world, I would — but there’s no better place to start than my community” says Tammy.

Through her dedication, Tammy is more than just a project manager — she’s a guiding force helping families rebuild not only their homes but their lives. Her work with Resilient SRQ is creating a more resilient, stable and hopeful future for residents as they recover from the impact of Hurricane Ian.

Meet Marquis Bing

As a transportation planning engineer for Sarasota County, Marquis plays a vital role in designing a safer, more efficient transportation network that connects his community. Every project he oversees is rooted in a commitment to improving mobility, reducing congestion and prioritizing public safety.

Marquis spends his days analyzing and evaluating the current transportation network to identify improvements and plan for future needs. Whether reviewing land use applications to recommend transportation-related enhancements or collaborating with project applicants, engineers and citizens, Marquis ensures every decision aligns with the community’s long-term vision.

His work also includes compiling critical transportation data to secure grant funding for essential projects. By leveraging this funding, Marquis helps implement initiatives that improve safety, expand accessibility and work with other engineers to help incorporate innovative infrastructure solutions such as bike lanes, pedestrian walkways and enhanced intersections.

Marquis is more than a planner, he is a connector. He listens to residents’ concerns and works closely with stakeholders to craft solutions that meet the needs of the entire community. His efforts not only create smoother commutes and safer streets but also lay the foundation for a more sustainable future.

Meet Donald Miller

Meet Donald, the expert behind the machines that keep Sarasota County’s first responders on the move. As a heavy truck and equipment technician specializing in the county’s emergency vehicles, Donald plays a critical role in maintaining fire trucks, ambulances, UTVs, and the heaviest machinery rolling through the bay doors of Fleet Services. If it has wheels, gears or a motor, Donald knows how to make it run.

With a knack for diagnosing issues in diesel, gasoline and electric equipment, Donald’s days are anything but dull. He’s an ace with hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and when a part doesn’t exist, he welds and fabricates one from scratch like a mechanical artist. Equipped with diagnostic software and a toolbox full of expertise, Donald ensures emergency services vehicles are ready for action—because in his world, downtime isn’t an option when lives and public safety are on the line.

Donald’s job isn’t just about fixing vehicles; it’s about ensuring our community can count on them when it matters most. Firefighters racing to an emergency? They’re on the road thanks to Donald.

“It’s really rewarding to know that my work ensures first responders can safely reach community members in their time of need,” he said.

Whether he’s elbow-deep in an engine or wielding with a torch, he’s always working to make Sarasota County safe and reliable for everyone. His can-do attitude, creative problem-solving and commitment to keeping things running smoothly, Donald is one of the many unsung heroes of Fleet Services.

Meet Aretha Gipson

As a Veterans Outreach Service Officer for Sarasota County, Aretha dedicates her work to serving Veterans and their families, drawing not only on her own 20 years of experience in the United States Navy but also on her family’s deep connection to service. As a retired Navy Chief, married to a retired Navy firefighter with a son currently enlisted in the U.S. Army, Aretha’s commitment to supporting Veterans is a personal mission.

Every day, Aretha transforms lives through her work. She hosts benefits seminars and provides one-on-one guidance to Veterans and their families, helping them access healthcare, disability benefits, educational opportunities and more. Understanding how to navigate the Veterans Affairs system and the impact of each benefit, she is relentless in ensuring Veterans receive the support they have earned. Her empathy, rooted in her own journey from military to civilian life, fuels her advocacy and empowers those she serves.

“It is an honor to help Veterans in my community. These individuals served our country and it’s an honor to serve them in return” says Aretha.

Aretha collaborates with local Veteran organizations to build a strong, connected network of community support. Her case management services go beyond paperwork—she follows up on claims, advocates for Veterans’ rights and resolves complex benefit issues to ensure no Veteran is left behind.

Her impact reaches far beyond the office, helping to create a community where Veterans are honored, supported and never alone on their journey forward. Aretha demonstrates the core values of what it means to lead a life of service — whether that be safeguarding freedom for our country or fighting for Veterans in our community.

Meet Richard Bunn

As the Chief Water Plant Operator of the T. Mabry Carlton, Jr. Water Treatment Facility in Venice, Richard plays a pivotal role in ensuring that Sarasota County has access to one of life’s most precious resources — clean, safe water. His work goes beyond just keeping things running; it’s about protecting and ensuring the health and well-being of thousands of residents every single day.

Richard leads a team of dedicated plant operators, all committed to the same cause —providing the best water for our community. He ensures that they follow strict protocols for water testing and treatment, knowing that every step they take could impact the health of our community. Their unwavering commitment ensures that every drop of water reaching homes and businesses meets high-quality standards.

But Richard’s work doesn’t stop with daily operations. He’s always looking ahead, leading efforts to repair and maintain the plant’s vital equipment. By scheduling routine maintenance and overseeing repairs, Richard ensures the plant runs efficiently, minimizing service disruptions and safeguarding the community’s water supply.

Through his efforts, Richard makes an extraordinary impact on his community. His dedication to public health and safety ensures that the water flowing into every home is reliable and safe, proving that, in every drop, his work helps preserve our most precious commodity.

Meet Natalie Barber

Meet Natalie Barber, an Environmental Specialist III with our Mosquito Management Services team. Natalie is no stranger to mosquito-borne diseases. As a teacher at the beginning of her career, she traveled to different countries educating high school students in areas heavily susceptible to mosquito-borne illnesses. In those countries, she learned the importance of mosquito management practices and the devastation that comes from an outbreak.

“I have experience living in countries with mosquito-borne diseases, so I take my work very seriously. It is rewarding work to know that I am doing my part to protect the public as much as possible from mosquito-borne diseases” says Natalie.

Beginning in Mosquito Management Services as a seasonal aide, Natalie worked her way up to becoming the division’s Community Outreach Specialist before growing into her current role as an Environmental Specialist III.

Natalie oversees the adult mosquito surveillance program, a cornerstone of the division's efforts to monitor and manage mosquito populations. In her day-to-day, she sets up and repairs light traps, ensuring they are functioning to capture mosquitoes. Natalie counts and identifies mosquitoes from trap bags, providing critical data on population trends and potential disease. This information is vital for implementing timely treatments in key areas. Once she’s finished in the lab, Natalie compiles and writes detailed reports on mosquito activity and trends, supporting effective data-based decisions on the different treatment methods throughout the county to keep the community safe.

While mosquitoes may be considered public enemy No. 1 at most outdoor gatherings, Natalie enjoys working with them so much that she decided to pursue her master’s degree in Medical Entomology to study how people are affected by mosquitoes. This further highlights her commitment to understanding the science of mosquitoes and looking for more pathways to provide protection for our community.

Despite the mosquito’s reputation for persistence, they have met their match with Natalie. She is committed to learning about local mosquito populations and using that data to help make Sarasota County a safe and healthy place to live.

Meet Dr. Katherine Clements 

Dr. Katherine Clements, an Ecology and Natural Resources Educator for Sarasota County UF/IFAS Extension and Sustainability, stands out as a passionate advocate for the environment. Her work influences the natural landscape and the people and animals who call Sarasota County home.

Katherine develops educational programs that teach residents about local ecosystems, conservation practices and sustainable living. She provides community presentations on local wildlife and plant species, sharing her extensive knowledge and fostering a deep appreciation for the natural world. As a lead instructor for the Florida Master Naturalist Program, Katherine trains and mentors individuals dedicated to understanding and preserving Florida's natural resources. The programs she’s created offer immersive experiences that inspire community members to become active stewards of their environment.

There is never a typical day at the office, which Katherine loves about her position. One day she might be out with fifth-grade students dip netting for marine life in the seagrass beds of Lemon Bay with the LIFE program or taking the UF/IFAS animal ambassador snake, Maizey, to an outreach event. The next day may be spent developing educational materials or trudging through a cypress dome with her Florida Master Naturalist class.

“Sarasota County Extension provides me an opportunity to work with a team of like-minded professionals driven to protect our environment and a platform to share my love of nature with our community. I hope that in a small way every day I am helping create connections with nature that will lead to continued conservation of our treasured natural areas,” says Katherine.

For Katherine, there is a deeper purpose to her work: the drive to make a difference by helping others make meaningful connections in nature. To her, understanding leads to connection, and connection leads to caring and respect. These positive connections and experiences plant seeds of their own; allowing an appreciation for nature and a desire to protect our environment a chance to bloom for generations to come.

Meet Matthew Bishop

Matthew Bishop began his Sarasota County career in Public Works with the Stormwater division. He steadily worked his way up before transitioning to the Field Services team as an Equipment Operator III. Through his work, Matthew transforms the very landscape of our community. His team maintains 2,800 acres of grass and landscaping in more than 300 medians along county roadways.

Trimming trees, mowing grass and edging the sidewalks seems like a simple operation on the surface. When you take a closer look, you’ll find that his team is meticulous and efficient with their work. Every team member works together seamlessly to maintain miles of roadway. Like a well-oiled machine, everyone knows their role and works together to create clean, well-kept spaces that enhance the quality of life for everyone.

Matthew also performs small-engine repairs, safety checks and routine maintenance on department equipment. His expertise in operating and maintaining this equipment is crucial for the upkeep of the county’s green spaces. His work ensures these areas are not only safe and tidy, but also inviting for the community to enjoy.

“I enjoy making Sarasota County beautiful and ensuring our roadways are safe for our community. It’s a great feeling when our work is recognized and appreciated by the community” says Matthew.

During emergency weather events, Matthew and his team play a vital role by clearing roadways for other first responders, ensuring they can reach those in need without delay. This critical work highlights their dedication to the safety of our community.

Meet Katie White 

Katie White is a Strategic Business Partner for Sarasota County Government. She works behind the scenes to help shape our community for the better. The strategic initiatives she works on are not just about building codes and zoning regulations; they're about creating spaces where our community can thrive.

Supporting strategic efforts for various county initiatives, Katie ensures that projects align with the overarching goals of our community. Outside her role, Katie has worked on a process improvement project helping the county with a feasibility study that led to the creation of the county’s 311 Center.

"I have enjoyed being able to put my unique skillset and approach to problem-solving to use, providing valuable insights and guidance that help fulfill the county’s vision and mission and have the potential to drive positive change and improve the services we provide," said White.

Katie oversees the countywide Public Notices Program, ensuring that important development information reaches residents in a timely and accessible manner. Through her proactive communication strategies, community engagement remains at the forefront of her role in the organization. But perhaps what truly sets Katie apart is her understanding that the best plans are those that reflect the aspirations of the people they serve.

Katie’s impact extends beyond her role as a government employee; she helps provide the framework for positive change. Her strategic vision and commitment to community engagement make her an invaluable asset to the Sarasota County team and a driving force behind the transformation of our community.

Meet Stephanie Robinson 

Stephanie Robinson is a driver for change in our community — literally. She is a Breeze bus operator in our Transit department and is building our community one stop at a time.

When you step into Stephanie’s office, there is no shortage of seats to pick from. 280 horsepower propels her from one “meeting” to the next. Every shift, she navigates the county with precision and care, ensuring her passengers reach their destinations safely and on time.

For many, Stephanie isn't just a driver; she's a trusted source of comfort in a busy world.  She knows the names of regular commuters, greets them with a smile and listens to their stories. Whether it's lending an attentive ear or a kind word, Stephanie offers it willingly, fostering a sense of community among her passengers.

When asked about her favorite route, she’ll proudly tell you route 17 which runs from downtown Sarasota to the Venice Train Depot. She loves the scenery and the multitude of people she gets to meet along the route.

“I love meeting and helping people from all walks of life. I care about my passengers, and I feel like I’m doing my part to better my community,” says Robinson.

Many may not realize they are driving beside a hometown hero when Stephanie is behind the wheel. Her impact transcends the act of driving, evident in the strength of the relationships she’s built and continues to build with community members while on the move.
