948 Beach Road, Siesta Key, FL
Siesta Beach is one of the community's premiere assets attracting millions of visitors each year. When originally purchased by the county in the early 1950's the beach encompassed only 9-acres and 1200 feet. Mother nature's own work combined with the county purchase of additional property to the south has expanded the beach to more than 100-acres. The approved project to upgrade many parts of the beach, its parking areas and amenities is scheduled to begin in 2013.
The project will increase and improve parking and pedestrian access, upgrade and expand recreational opportunities and facilities, and restore the historic pavilion built in the 1950s.
Design and construction is included as part of the voter approved Surtax III Economic Stimulus Program. Many of the existing structures and features of the park have exceeded their service life. Among the amenities planned for the beach park are:
- A pedestrian esplanade connecting the park from east to west
- An expanded and renovated parking lot
- Improved access to and from Beach Road
- Modern and expanded restrooms
- An upgraded and elevated concession area
- Relocation of several buildings and restoration of the historic pavilion as a public gathering place
The new and upgraded beach park facilities are designed to improve sustainability through more efficient use of space and materials, expand landscaping using native plants, and improve stormwater management through the use of low-impact design principles.
Final design of the plan is expected to continue through 2012 with phased construction anticipated to begin in 2013.
Funding for design and construction of the project will be provided through the infrastructure Surtax III, the penny sales tax.
