The Selby Public Library has been a selective depository in the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) since 1970. Currently, the Library receives about 50% of the government publications that are distributed through the Federal Depository Library Program. The Government Publishing Office provides the publications at no cost to designated depository libraries. These libraries, in turn, provide local, no-fee access to government information in all formats in a non-partisan environment with professional assistance. Depository libraries have safeguarded the public’s right to know by collecting, preserving, organizing and maintaining access to information since 1813, when Congress established the Federal Depository Library Program.
The Selby Public Library collection consists of legislative hearings, federal regulations, census reports, statistical reports, agency publications, posters CDs, DVDs and microfiche. Subject coverage of the collection ranges from health to environmental studies to space and foreign relations. In addition, the Selby Public Library’s depository status provides users with on-line access to many U.S. government databases, e-books, e-journals and websites.
The documents are shelved and filed by the Superintendent of Documents Classification system. This system is based on issuing agency rather than on subject or personal author. Documents can be located in SUNCAT and via the U.S. Government Printing Office at http://www.gpo.gov.
The collection is located on the second floor of the library and is accessible during regular library hours. Most materials are available for checkout. For questions or help finding a document, staff at the Reference Desk can provide assistance.
Every Federal Depository Library is required to have the “Basic Collection” of government documents. Publications in this “Basic Collection” are vital sources of information that support the public’s right to know about the workings and essential activities of their Federal Government. Most of these publications are available online.
