Be Ready Together: Prepare now for hurricane season

Post Date:05/21/2026 9:30 AM

SARASOTA COUNTY — Hurricane season is almost here, and Sarasota County officials encourage residents, businesses and visitors to take steps now to prepare. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30.

After experiencing multiple storms in 2024, including Hurricanes Debby, Helene and Milton, much of the community continues to recover. While Sarasota County has weathered powerful storms before, preparation — not past experience — should guide residents’ decisions as a storm approaches.

“We understand many in our community are still recovering from previous storms. We don’t know yet what this season will bring, so now is the time to take the steps needed to protect your loved ones and property,” said Sarasota County Emergency Management Chief Sandra Tapfumaneyi. “Understand the risks you may face, know your evacuation level and stay informed by signing up for emergency alerts.”

Every storm is different, and impacts can occur far outside the forecast cone. Sarasota County experienced storm surge and flooding even while outside the projected path of storms. This is why it is important to remain vigilant and follow official guidance.

One of the greatest risks in Sarasota County is storm surge. To increase awareness of this risk, the county has installed tall, colorful markers on Siesta, Manasota and North Jetty beaches to demonstrate how high storm surge can rise and serve as a visual reminder of why timely evacuation saves lives.

“Preparedness is critical, especially because every storm behaves differently,” said Tapfumaneyi. “Do not wait to gather supplies or make your plans. Ensure your loved ones know what to do, and stay informed throughout hurricane season.”

Ready Together

Families, neighbors, communities and county employees all play a role in preparedness. Year-round, county staff work to strengthen facilities, coordinate transportation, prepare plans and train for emergency response.

Through annual preparedness efforts, including the recent “Operation Readiness” trainings, Sarasota County teams partnered with municipalities, nonprofits and community organizations to help ensure everyone can respond and recover quickly. These efforts brought together more than 1,600 county staff members, stakeholders and community participants.

Readiness starts at home. Prepare now:

  • Read the Sarasota County Emergency Preparedness Guide.
  • Sign up for emergency alerts at AlertSarasotaCounty.com.
  • Know your evacuation level and make a plan for your family. Know where you will go and how you will get there. Remember, manufactured homes, RVs, vessels and other structures not built to withstand strong winds are included in evacuation level A.
  • Build an emergency supply kit that includes medications and essentials for every member of the household, including pets.
  • Secure important documents and keep digital copies.
  • Check on neighbors, especially those new to the area.
  • Keep vehicles at least half full of fuel during hurricane season, and move electric vehicles and e-bikes away from structures before a storm.

Evacuation orders are issued only when life-threatening conditions are expected. During the 2024 season, residents took those warnings seriously, and that vigilance saved lives. If an evacuation is ordered, it is for residents’ safety. Do not wait. Follow all instructions and stay informed through official county channels, including scgov.net, Alert Sarasota County and local media. Residents can also follow @SRQCountyGov on social media.

When the community is Ready Together, Sarasota County is stronger and more resilient.
