SARASOTA COUNTY — Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources received two national awards from the National Association of County Park and Recreation Officials (NACPRO) for outstanding achievements in parks and recreation.

The Nokomis Community Park Improvements Project was honored in the Developed Recreation Parks and Facilities category, recognizing excellence in the design, development, and operation of the park and its amenities. In addition, Sarasota County earned a Park and Recreation Program award for the Agents of Discovery app, an innovative program that inspires engagement and participation.

The 17-acre Nokomis Community Park reopened in May 2025 following a comprehensive renovation that expanded recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

Upgrades include eight lighted pickleball courts, resurfaced tennis and basketball courts, new shade structures, a pavilion, picnic shelters, and improved restrooms, sidewalks, landscaping, and utilities. Enhancements to the community center and amenities such as a playground, a kayak launch, a fishing pier, and trail connections further improve access and usability.

The Agents of Discovery app launched in June 2025 in partnership with UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County. It offers free, self-guided educational experiences in local parks.

The app uses interactive, place-based missions to engage users, particularly families, in learning about ecology, conservation, and natural resources.

NACPRO is affiliated with the National Association of Counties and the National Recreation and Park Association. Awards will be presented May 20 during NACPRO’s annual meeting in Sarasota.
