You and your family can make amazing scientific discoveries in your yard, your neighborhood or just about anywhere you venture, with our new "Explore Your World" backpack kits, at Sarasota County public libraries.

Designed by UF/IFAS Extension and Sustainability, in collaboration with Sarasota County Libraries, the Explore Your World kit helps adventurers of all ages explore the wonders of nature around them.

Explore Your World backpack kit, and its array of contents.

Available for free checkout at any of the 10 Sarasota County Libraries locations (www.scgov.net/library), the kit packs all you'll need to start exploring:

  • child-friendly binoculars,
  • compass,
  • magnifying lens,
  • underwater explorer boat,
  • planisphere (night sky map),
  • field guides,
  • an array of outdoor exploration activities, and
  • library books for all ages to continue your learning and exploration.

You can use the Explore Your World kit just about anywhere, from city sites to state parks, and from the backyard to the beach. Take it to any of our wonderful Sarasota County parks. Journey to Oscar Scherer State Park or Myakka River State Park. Or find a park in Sarasota City, North Port, or Venice.

Recent studies show that time in nature builds confidence, promotes creativity and imagination, teaches responsibility, provides stimulation, gets kids moving, inspires thinking, and reduces stress and fatigue. These benefit children and adults, and last beyond the time spent in nature.

Best of all, it's just plain fun!

Look for our Explore Your World backpack kits at Sarasota County Libraries. You also can join us for a family-friendly hour of nature discovery with the backpack creator, at free classes March 14 at the Betty J. Johnson North Sarasota Public Library and the Shannon Staub Public Library, in North Port. Learn more and register for either event at http://tiny.cc/ufsarasota_exploreevents

And, don't forget to ask about our other backpack kits while you're at the library: the Do-It-Yourself Energy/Water Audit Kit, to help you save resources and cut costs at home, and our Family Green Living Kit (coming soon), packed with family-friendly activities to make a positive impact in our world.
