Sarasota County approves land agreement with Mote for new aquarium

Sarasota County Commissioners approved the omnibus agreement with Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium on Wednesday, Jan. 30, which serves as the overarching document for all subsequent agreements with Mote, including the short-term lease and conveyance of land near Nathan Benderson Park.
The board of county commissioners voted unanimously to approve the resolution that will authorize the short-term lease upon Mote completing their due diligence, which will begin the process of conveying the land to Mote. If all conditions of the agreements are met, Mote can begin constructing the proposed aquarium.
"County staff have worked diligently with Mote Marine staff, " said County Administrator Jonathan Lewis. "The board recognizes the value of this project to the community."
Back in October, the county commissioners approved separating Mote's request for land from their request for financial support, and asked county staff to bring back a resolution supporting the proposed aquarium. The county commissioners approved the resolution supporting the proposed aquarium project and requested a term sheet to be developed and brought back for their consideration. The term sheet was approved on Oct. 24, 2018.
