WEBINAR - 5 class series, occurring on consecutive Thursdays

Fire-resistant landscaping, or firescaping, is a landscape design that reduces the vulnerability of a home and property to wildfire.

About this Event
NOTE: This is a five-class series, occurring on consecutive Thursdays. You must attend all classes to receive a certificate of attendance and Master Gardener CEU credits. No partial credit will be given for partial attendance.

Every year, hundreds to thousands of wildfires occur in each southern state. Homeowners and communities most at risk to wildfire live in the boundary between natural areas, or wildlands, and human development; known as the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI). Fortunately, there are actions WUI homeowners and communities can make to protect their homes from wildfire, such as firescaping.

Fire-resistant landscaping, or firescaping, is a landscape design that reduces the vulnerability of a home and property to wildfire. The Preparing for Wildfires with Firescaping advanced training teaches why and how to create a firescape. With this training, you will gain knowledge to aid in reducing your own home’s risk, as well as to educate your communities about the importance of firescaping.

In this training, Master Gardener Volunteers, Master Naturalists, and anyone interested will learn about:

  • Week 1: Zoom tips and tricks for our webinars AND Wildland fire history and behavior

  • Week 2: Home wildfire risk factors

  • Week 3: Plant flammability

  • Week 4: Firescape design and maintenance

  • Week 5: Firescaping combined with other landscape goals

Classes are scheduled for two hours, to allow for differences in content and discussion length. Classes may end early if all material is covered. This training will offer seven hours of continuing education credits for Master Gardeners if completed. No partial credit.
