Oscar Scherer State Park

The Oscar Scherer State Park is largely known as one of the bestplaces to see Florida scrub-jays, a threatened species endemic to Florida.'The park protects scrub and pine flatwoods that were once widespread throughout Sarasota County, but now are almost entirely consumed by development.'The park offers an extensive15 mile trail system that is ideal for hiking, bicycling and wildlife viewing for all ages. The trails range from a half mile ADA compliant trail to a five mile trail loop trail.

Canoeists, kayakers and paddle boarders can explore South Creek, a backwater stream that connects to the Intracoastal Waterway, and ultimately flows to the Gulf of Mexico.'Canoe and kayak rentals are available at the park.'Oscar Scherer State Park provides freshwater and saltwater fishing opportunities for anglers along the creek, as well as Lake Osprey, which is also the park's swimming destination.'Furthermore, Oscar Scherer offers a wide-range of opportunities including: traditional camping, RV camping, ADA compliant camping sites, youth and adult group camping, picnic areas, grills, pavilion rentals and play equipment.'The park is pet-friendly.'Their nature center provides educational exhibits and videos demonstrating the park's natural communities.'Access to the park can be gained two miles south of downtown Osprey on US 41, as well as along the Legacy Bike Trail.

Since becoming a green business partner, Oscar Scherer State Park has built upon their already impressive conservation programs.'From a recycling standpoint, the park has switched to a single stream recycling program, making it easier for both staff and visitors to participate. They have also ensured that recycling containers are readily available and labeled properly.''Oscar Scherer is also using the recommendation from their FPL audit to assist with energy decisions.'Moving forward, the park will be changing broken and burned out lights to fluorescents and LEDs, as well as installing programmable thermostats that will be set to78' coolingand 68' heating.'Water conservation measures at the park have include installing tankless water heaters, faucet aerators in camping areas and waterless no-flushurinals, reducing water usage at the park dramatically.

During the application process, Oscar Scherer State Park enlisted the help of Girl Scout Troop 171.'As part of their service project, the girl scouts worked along with the park staff in completing the green business application requirements, and even created a children's coloring book outlining energy and conservation measures.
