Jefferson Center

The Jefferson Center is a not-for-profit senior residence that was founded in 1968 to provide equal housing opportunity for senior retirement living. Their mission is to provide a caring community for low to moderate income seniors who need affordable housing in Sarasota.

As part of the Jefferson Center's responsibility to the community and the environment, a conservation and recycling program was instituted. The program included education of residents and staff, monitoring program progress and publicizing results. All residents and staff participate as fully as possible. The recycling program includes recycling paper, cans, glass, newspaper and other items.

In addition to the recycling program, the Jefferson Center's mission is to optimize energy and water conservation opportunities. The Center replaced 435 windows with e-tinted, impact resistant ones, installed a new reflective roof made from recycled content, and upgraded their HVAC systems with a frictionless, centrifugal chiller system that reduces energy consumption by 40 percent. They have switched to CFL and LED light bulbs, and are currently replacing older T-12 fixtures to more-efficient T-8 lighting ballasts. Water conservation measures have included the installation of low flow toilets and aerators in kitchens, bath and shower areas.
