The mission of Sarasota County Historical Resources is to promote an understanding of Sarasota County’s heritage and protect its historic resources.
The Historical Resources collects information and artifacts related to the history of the county from pre-historic times to the present. These collections are stored in the center's archives at 6062 Porter Way in Sarasota, where they are made available for public research. Also at this site is the MacKinlay Kantor Room exhibit, which contains books and objects from the library of this long time Sarasota resident and Pulitzer Prize-winning author (1904 - 1977).
The Historical Resources Library is a comprehensive research center. It has a non-circulating collection emphasizing the history and culture of the county with volumes on archaeology, architectural history, archives management, and historic preservation. Publications written by local authors are held in the collection.
The History Center Museum at the historic Chidsey Library Building is located at 701 N. Tamiami Trail in Sarasota, sharing the building with the Visitor Information Center. Permanent and rotating exhibits of the county’s history and pre-history are on display in the museum.
To help protect the county’s historic resources, the center participates in the county’s development review process, supports the county’s historic designation program, provides information to the public about how to preserve historic structures, and maintains an appropriate physical environment for its collections.
