Step 1 - Increase your Knowledge

Smart home energy upgrades pay for themselves in money saved on utility bills. Some of the most important energy improvement opportunities for your home may be the least obvious.
Before you make an investment of time and/or money in home energy improvements, you might want to participate in a home energy survey.
Choose the survey that best meets your needs:

FPL In Home Survey and Duct Test
Leaky ducts can lead to cold air escaping into areas that you don't want to cool. This costs you more money on your energy bill and wastes air conditioned air.

FPL offers a free in-home energy survey as well as duct testing. Duct testing costs $30 for the first air conditioning system and $15 for each additional system. FPL will provide you with a detailed repair report if the ductwork requires repairs and will also provide you with a list of independent contractors who are qualified to make the repairs.

For additional information visit FPL's website. The home survey can also measure your existing insulation and determine if you are eligible for FPL energy incentives.

Comprehensive Home Energy Audit

Residential energy rater professionals are trained and certified in providing an analysis of a home's energy performance.

  • The energy rater uses both visual inspections and diagnostic testing using specialized equipment to evaluate your home's energy efficiency.
  • A comprehensive home energy audit evaluates an existing home to determine where and how energy is being lost and what systems are operating inefficiently.
  • Based on the specific needs of your home, the rater will recommend cost-effective energy improvements that will lower your utility costs and make your home more comfortable year-round.
  • These recommendations will provide quantified savings that will result if you choose to make improvements.
  • An audit like this helps provide a comprehensive energy improvement strategy for your home with specific estimates of the possible savings.

Costs vary based on the size of the house and the complexity of the heating and cooling system. Comprehensive home energy audits that include computer software analysis to identify and prioritize proposed energy improvements with a cost/benefit analysis for the recommended improvements typically range from $600 to $1000. A home energy rating will help you understand the smartest energy upgrades for your home before you invest in any improvements.
