 Power Strip

Even when turned off, most electronic and IT equipment use a small amount of electricity.

The average U.S. household spends approximately $100 per year on devices while they are switched off yet remain in a standby mode.

  • Plug electronics into a power strip so you actually disconnect the power supply when you turn off the strip.
  • ENERGY STAR recommends plugging your computer, printer, scanner and other computer accessories into one power strip, and plugging your home electronics (TV, VCR, DVD, stereo, gaming systems) into another power strip.
  • Remember: timers won't work if the power strip is turned off.
    • If you want to time your DVR to record a program, for example, you can't turn it off with a power strip.
  • A smart power strip senses when the electronics plugged into it are not in use and turns off power to such peripheral devices.
This program receives funding from the US Department of Energy's Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program.
