Bed-side Lamp
  • Replace fixtures and bulbs with ENERGY STAR-qualified lighting products.
  • Turn off lights when you're not in the room.

Ceiling Fan

  • Ceiling fans make you feel cooler by circulating the air without actually lowering the room temperature.
  • ENERGY STAR-qualified ceiling fans are over 50 percent more efficient than conventional fan/light units and can save you more than $15 per year on utility bills.
  • By increasing your comfort, a ceiling fan may also allow you to turn up the thermostat a bit.
  • Since ceiling fans cool people, not rooms, turn off fans when you leave the room to save energy.
If you plan to add lighting to an existing fan, be sure to purchase an ENERGY STAR qualified light kit. This lighting is efficient and long lasting, so you won't have to make frequent bulb changes.

Room Air Conditioner

  • ENERGY STAR-qualified room air conditioners often include timers for better temperature control, allowing you to use the minimum amount of energy you need to cool your room.
Winter: Insulate room air conditioners from the outside with a tight-fitting cover.
Summer: Be sure the air conditioner fits tightly in the window so outdoor air is not getting in. Not sure what size room air conditioner you need to maximize energy savings? Check ENERGY STAR for what size unit is best for your cooling needs.
