Rain Filled Containers Can Become Mosquito Nurseries

Domestic Mosquitoes
All mosquitoes develop as larvae in standing water. What makes domestic mosquitoes different from others is the type of water in which they develop (water-filled containers) and their particular biting habits.

People Biters
Since we are their primary hosts, domestic mosquitoes have adapted to our lifestyles by biting during the day when people are likely to be outside.

Most domestic mosquitoes species spend their entire lives within 1000 feet of their container larval site.

Diseases
Two domestic mosquito species, the yellow fever mosquito and the Asian Tiger mosquito, are able to transmit several diseases, including dengue fever. Two other domestic species bite, but do not spread disease.

What You Can Do

  • Dump, flush or discard all rain-filled containers in your yard every three days.
  • Saving rainwater? Fit screen wire over the opening.
  • Never throw yard waste or trash in ditches or swales.
  • Clean out eaves, troughs and gutters.
  • Check tarps on boats, pools and equipment.
  • Replace water in bird baths and pet dishes often.
