Energy is strongly linked to our use of
water. Conserving water also conserves energy and vice versa.
Did you know:
- Only three percent of the world’s water
is fresh and less than one percent is potable
- Power generation uses 38 percent of
the fresh water in the U.S., second only to agricultural
irrigation which uses 39 percent.
- Between 7-8 percent of U.S. energy
consumption can be traced to moving or treating water. In
Sarasota County operations, 20 percent of energy consumption
goes to pumping and treating water for the public.
- That amounted to $3.2 million in
FY05.
- For every one million gallons of
water used four million watt hours of power are expended and
5,360 pounds of C02 are emitted into the atmosphere.
Here's what
you can do to save water
Like with electricity, everyone can take personal responsibility
to ensure proper use of all fixtures, turning off water when it
is not in use. Learn the
current water restrictions
for your area.
Water conservation tips:
- Replace your showerhead with an
ultra-low flow model.
- If you suspect a leak follow the next
steps. Take the
Toilet Leak Test

- To find out if your toilet is
leaking, add a little food coloring to the tank.
- If you see the color in the bowl
30 minutes later, your toilet is leaking.
- Replace a high-flow toilet with one
using 1.6 gallons or less per flush.
- Take short showers instead of baths.
- Install aerators on all household
faucets.
- Run only full loads in the washing
machine and dishwasher.
- If you wash dishes by hand don’t
leave the water running for rinsing.
- Keep bottled drinking water in the
refrigerator.
