Treatment Plant (on Carlton Reserve)
The Carlton Water
Treatment Plant, located on more than 24,000 acres at the
Carlton Reserve, is Sarasota County's premier water treatment
facility. It uses Electrodialysis Reversal (EDR) to treat
millions of gallons of water every day. It is one of the largest
EDR facilities in the world.
EDR produces 85 gallons of
drinking water for every 100 gallons withdrawn from the ground;
this compares to 60-70 gallons produced per 100 gallons for
reverse osmosis, another membrane process. The water that the
Carlton wells utilize has too many minerals to drink without
treatment.
Special monitoring programs
ensure no environmental harm occurs include an ecological
monitoring plan, a vegetative monitoring plan, a hydroecological
monitoring plan, assessments of the hydrologic system and color
infra-red aerial photographs.
