Water
Meters
The water meters used by Sarasota County Utilities are designed
and manufactured to accurately measure water usage. Most
residential water meters are guaranteed to be accurate by the
manufacturer for 10 years or one million gallons, whichever
occurs first. Due to normal wear and tear, meters generally slow
down and therefore do not measure all the water used. Older
meters or meters that have registered over one million gallons
regardless of age are replaced during an annual water meter
replacement program.
Checking Your Water Meter
The majority of our water meters
are located below ground level, near the street, in a plastic,
metal, or concrete meter box. Opening the lid of this box and
wiping away or sometimes removing several inches of dirt will
reveal the water meter. Most meters are comprised of a meter
dial cover, usually imprinted with the meter number that appears
on your monthly billing statement, a glass meter dial and
register and a water shut off valve.
Located inside the glass face of
the water meter is a row of numbers, much like the odometer of a
car. This is the meter register that indicates the number of
gallons that have passed through the water meter since it was
manufactured. Since we bill only in whole hundreds of gallons,
although most meters register as small as a single gallon, we do
not read all the meter dial digits. Our meter readers only read
the numbers indicating hundreds of gallons. Compare your meter
reading on your monthly bill to the meter to determine which
digits we actually read
