Seniors Advisory Council
Governing Legislation:
Originally authorized pursuant to Resolution No. 2000-184. Amended by Resolution No. 2001-250. Amended by Resolution No. 2002-134. Council extended pursuant to Resolution 2006-119 and increased to 14 members.
Purpose: The purpose of the Seniors Advisory Council is to provide a conduit for citizen input to the County Commissioners to make recommendations and/or provide advice to the board on issues and conditions affecting Sarasota County's senior community.
Requirements: Terms are one year for the STAR representative, three years for all other representatives, except if the council sunsets. The next sunset review is in May 2010. Membership requirements include the following:
- One member from the local lead agency serving elders with Older Americans’ Act and/or Community Care for the Elderly funding (Senior Friendship Centers, Inc.)
- One member from the geriatric department of a local hospital
- One member representing the Sarasota County medical community
- One member with professional career experience in assisted living facilities serving elders and/or long-term care nursing facilities
- One At-Large member who is a Sarasota County resident 50-years of age or older
- One At-Large member who is a Sarasota County residents 55-years of age or older
- Two At-Large members who are Sarasota County residents 60-years of age or older
- Two At-Large members who are Sarasota County residents 70-years of age or older
- One At-Large member who is a Sarasota County resident 80-years of age or older
- One student from the Students Taking Active Roles (S.T.A.R.) in Government Program
- One member from the business and/or professional community with an interest in serving elders
- One member from the arts and/or life-long learning communities
No member of the Advisory Council shall hold and elected office as either a County Commissioner or a Constitutional Office of Sarasota County Government or employed by the Sarasota County Commissioners.
Term: Until the resolution sunsets in May 2010.
Meetings: Meetings are held at 3 p.m., on the first Thursday of every other month unless moved due to special circumstances.
