Tourist Development Council

Purpose: The Sarasota County Tourist Development Council (TDC), appointed by the Board of County Commissioners, is a countywide advisory council that recommends policy and oversees the use of all “bed tax” funds collected in Sarasota County pursuant to Florida Statute. In 1989, the citizens of Sarasota County approved the Tourist Development Tax and approved a Tourist Development Plan (Plan) to enhance the county’s ability to attract tourism through promotion, advertising and cultural events, which enhance these activities. Recognizing the importance of Sarasota County beaches as a major attraction for tourism, The Plan includes maintenance and restoration of county beaches. The renovation or construction of a sports stadium for major league baseball and other events which contribute to tourism and economic vitality throughout Sarasota County were added to the Plan in 2006. It is the TDC’s goal to create an atmosphere where all agencies work together to enhance Sarasota County as a premier tourist destination. It is also their goal to explore new ways of approaching opportunities and proposing solutions to problems that may work better than current methods.
The Sarasota County Board of County Commissioners recognizes the value of establishing a defined effort to examine the changing dynamics affecting Sarasota County’s tourist development, cultural environment and beach maintenance and restoration. High on their list of priorities is the ability to efficiently and effectively respond to the needs of the tourist industry sector of the county and to stimulate tourist development and growth. Therefore, the board designated the Tourist Development Council (TDC), as the board’s official advisory group to bring together a community-base plan for tourist development.
Members/Terms: Nine members/four year terms.
Meetings: The TDC shall meet at such times and places as the chair, or designee, deems appropriate in order to fulfill the mission and duties of the TDC as assigned by the board. Meetings are scheduled the third Thursday of every month.
