Sarasota County embraces a
leadership role in building green. By incorporating energy
efficiency, renewable energy and water conservation into our
county buildings, Sarasota County is able to save energy and taxpayer dollars at
the same time.
We also offer private sector incentives for green
building and green development through our Planning and Development Department, resulting in the planning,
construction and development of sustainable buildings.
Everyone wins
when we
design and construct buildings
that reduce environmental impact, reduce fossil fuel use,
preserve or enhance the site’s natural characteristics, use materials with lower energy usage and
toxicity, landscape appropriately and manage stormwater runoff
effectively.
Sarasota
County’s recent green building milestones include:
2006
- Green Development Resolution
established, expedited rezone and special exception
processing for developments meeting Florida Green Building
Coalition's (FGBC) Green Development standards.
- American Institute of
Architects’ 2030 Challenge accepted. First U.S. county to
adopt AIA challenge to design county buildings that are
carbon neutral, using no fossil fuel energy to operate.
- Renewable Community
Partnership established with National Renewable Energy Lab,
Florida Energy Office, Florida Solar Energy Center, Florida Green
Building Coalition, Sarasota Home Builders Association and
20 other organizations. A Renewable Community
Demonstration Project will utilize renewable energy to power
green homes and plug-in hybrid electric cars.
2005
- County's first USGBC LEED
Gold-NC certification received for North Sarasota Public
Library. USGBC LEED Gold
certification also received for Twin Lakes Park Green Office
Complex, includes the retrofitting of an older building into
an energy-efficient workspace and a new building constructed
as a showcase for green principles and sustainable
materials.
- Green Building Resolution
established, specifying that county buildings will be
designed, constructed or renovated to meet U.S. Green
Building Council (USGBC) or Florida Green Building Coalition
(FGBC) green building rating standards.
- To encourage voluntary green
building, county offers fast track permitting and reduced
building permit fee to new commercial, residential or
residential remodeling construction that meets FGBC or USGBC
standards.
