| The word charrette is a French
word for
"cart" or "chariot." It was not unusual for student architects
to continue working furiously, at the last minute, on the
illustrations for their design presentations, even while riding
in the school cart ("en charrette") on their way to
submit the projects to their professors. The term transformed
into the current design-related usage associated with working
right up until a deadline.
What is a Charrette?
A charrette is an intensive planning session where citizens,
stakeholders, and designers collaborate on a vision and a plan
for a site. It lasts several days and offers many
opportunities for the public to work with members of a design
and planning team to shape and refine a plan. It is a
unique activity that provides a forum for ideas and gives
immediate feedback to designers.
Why should you participate?
As someone who lives or works in the vicinity of the area
proposed for redevelopment, you know better than anyone what is
appropriate for your neighborhood. You are the expert.
Your knowledge is important to the design and planning team. It will help create a place that embodies the community's vision
and a plan that benefits all involved-residents, existing
businesses, local institutions, and the county.
Participate. Bring
Your Ideas. Imagine the Possibilities.
