Sarasota County, already a training ground for
athletes from around the world, will soon become one of the
premier rowing destinations in North America. The development of
Nathan Benderson Park has received the support of the Sarasota
County Commission, the
Sarasota Convention and Visitors Bureau
and rowing enthusiasts from around the world. The 600-acre
rowers paradise hosted its first regattas in 2009; Florida
Intercollegiate Rowing Association State Championships and the
44th Annual Florida Scholastic Rowing Association
State Championships, attracting more than 10,000 spectators and
participants.
The features of the lake in Nathan Benderson Park
include a 1500-meter course (with
planned expansion to 2000-meters
),
a straight shoreline perfect for viewing and enclosed fresh
water with no current. Combined with easy accessibility from
I-75, Sarasota’s balmy weather and many nearby hotel rooms
Sarasota County is staged to become one of the top rowing
destinations in the world.
