The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has been designated the lead state agency for responding to potential impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill along Florida’s shoreline. Their website will serve as the primary location for updates and information on response actions and impacts to the state of Florida.

What the public can do

Sarasota County officials are monitoring the situation. Residents and visitors are asked to help by reporting any sightings of oil in water, on beaches or animals.
  • Register as a volunteer with one of the links listed above.
  • Report oil spotted in water or on shoreline at 1-866-448-5816.
  • Save Our Seabirds has halted its request for volunteers, however are taking donations to help support their efforts, visit the website: Save Our Seabirds.
  • Do not attempt to clean birds or other wildlife – instead call Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission at 1-866-557-1401.
  • Do not attempt to place booms or other barrier devices in the water.
  • Visit www.VolunteerFlorida.org for other volunteer opportunities.
