Rails to Trails
Trailheads

There are currently six trailhead locations. The ultimate goal is to have a trailhead location approximately every mile along the 10.6-mile trail. All trailheads have parking, restrooms, water fountains and shelters. For trailhead maps click on the link on the left side of the page.

The Rollins W. Coakley Railroad Park and Historic Venice Train Depot are located just west of U.S. 41 Bypass off Venice Avenue. The depot primarily serves as the south county passenger transfer facility for Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT).

Patriot’s Park is located at U.S. Highway 41 and U.S. Highway 41 Bypass intersection. The trail will connect to the park through 12 foot sidewalks being constructed in conjunction with the U.S. Highway 41 Bypass project. The concrete sidewalk should be completed on or before the trail completion.

Nokomis Park is located east of U.S. Highway 41 Bypass on Nippino Trail. The connection to the park will be on the southwest corner of the park. There is an existing one mile primitive trail around the park that will connect to the trail.

Laurel Park is located to the east of U.S. Highway 41 on Collins Road. The park is to the south of Laurel Road. The fitness trail located on the eastside of the park is the connection to the trail.

Bay Street Park is location approximately one half mile east of U.S. Highway 41 in Osprey. Parking is available for the trail. A future connection is planned to Bay Street Park through improvements on Bay Street including sidewalks and bike lanes.

Oscar Scherer State Park is located off U.S. Highway 41 north of State Road 681. The trail will connect to the park through the park’s existing trails system. Overnight camping is permitted. In May 2006. the first fun run was held in the park and along the trail.

A future connection to Potter Park is planned via the Stoneybrook trail. The Stoneybrook trail is on Central Sarasota Parkway and will connect the trail to the park near U.S. Highway 41.

The county also will open a parking area for trail users just north of the Central County Water Reclamation Facility off McIntosh Road. A future trailhead is planned for this area. The planned trail head is currently not funded for design or construction.
