Staff with knowledge of
historic resources in Sarasota County have been reviewing developments for
potential impacts to significant historic and archaeological resources since the
1980's. This review process was formalized in the historic preservation chapter
of the Sarasota County Comprehensive Plan prior to the adoption of an ordinance
that addressed historic and archaeological resource protection in 1995.
In 1997
two additional pieces of legislation were passed; one creating the Sarasota
County Historic Preservation Board and a process for historically designating
significant historic resources, and the other an ad-valorem tax exemption for
qualifying projects on historically designated buildings and structures. |
