unveiled. It was, in fact, one of the county's pilot
participants. The company has incorporated environmental
stewardship in every aspect of the business. It is particularly
outstanding in its management of hazardous waste and used oil.

This law firm's staff recognized that paper use was a
significant opportunity for reduction. The firm now reuses scrap
paper for note pads and printing draft copies, sends documents
electronically, and has implemented a practice of bundling
mailing of documents to clents, instead of sending multiple,
individual mailings. Bundling documents saves energy and reduced
air pollution by reducing the number of trips staff make to the
post office. In order to save energy, the firm has installed T-8
fluorescent lighting, turns off unnecessary lights and sets its
thermostat to 78 degrees.

Doctor's Hospital of Sarasota is a 168-bed acute and general
care facility serving Sarasota and Manatee counties. Using the
Green Business Partnership application as its environmental
program model, Doctor’s has formed a Green Team comprised of a
cross-section of staff members. Its environmental program has
already reduced the hospital’s environmental impacts with
installation of rain sensors on outdoor sprinklers, the
conversion of employee records to electronic storage, the
removal of excess fluorescent bulbs, and the switch to a pest
control company that practices green pest control. The
hospital’s new Linen Conservation Initiative program has already
saved more than 50,000 kWh of electricity, 10,000 gallons of
water and $56,000 in operating costs. Doctor's has integrated
environmental stewardship into all facets of its operations,
including administration, maintenance and patient care.

Of particular note among the environmentally-friendly actions
taken by Dr. Hughes in his dental office, is the installation of
a mercury amalgam recovery system. This system will prevent
mercury from going into drains and subsequently into the
county's wastewater treatment plant. Although not required, Dr.
Hughes installed this system because he runs an environmentally
conscientious
business and, "Wants to do the right thing."
