Project Update –
October 2009
The South Creek
Waterways Maintenance Project had to be re-advertised because only
one dredge contractor bid on the project and then withdrew from the project one week before the contract was
to go to the county commission for consideration. The
contractor’s decision was based on difficulties they were having
in locating a site for dewatering the dredged sediment prior to
hauling it to the landfill.
A county crew
obtained water depth data in March of 2009. The data was
collected within the proposed project area as well as in
existing mooring areas (outside of the project area).
The project is
intended to provide a channel that varies in width between 15
and 30 feet, with a depth of five feet at mean low water. Any
additional dredging is the responsibility of the property owners
and must be properly permitted. Property owners are encouraged
to begin the permitting process at this time, March 2009, to
ensure that the permits are issued prior to the county project
completion so that the county's dredge contractor can be
utilized by property owners for their dredging. The project will
be required to be completed and verified prior to the contractor
doing any additional private dredging.
The South Creek
Bayou 1 project has been bundled with two other dredging
projects. Should the county receive an acceptable bid, the South
Creek Bayou 1 project will be either the second or third project
dredged. By bundling the project with others, it is anticipated
that a cost savings will be realized through a reduced
mobilization/demobilization cost. |
