Project Update –
October 2009
In
April 2008, the Sarasota County Commission approved the
maintenance dredge construction contract with Energy Resources,
Inc., from Chesterfield, Missouri. Construction began in June
2008 and was completed within two weeks. Disposal of the dredged
sediment at the Sarasota county landfill and restoration of the
dewatering site was completed in August 2008.
At a Dec. 9, 2008, public
hearing, the county commission approved Ordinance 2008-123,
which updated the legal sketch and description of the project
unit, revised the definition of project unit and introduced a
definition for funding district. The commission also approved a
resolution declaring a notice of intent for the levy, collection
and enforcement of non-ad valorem assessments to pay for the
maintenance dredge project. In addition, following the public
hearing, the commission approved agreements with the Sarasota
County Property Appraiser and Tax Collector for the respective
levy and collection of the non-ad valorem assessments.
At a June 10, 2009 public
hearing, staff presented the county commission with the initial rate
resolution and estimated assessment amounts. The commission
unanimously approved the resolution. The assessments were
finalized during the September 2009 budget meetings and the
first of ten annual assessments appeared on the November 2009
tax bill.
