Matheny Creek Project Update –
October 2009
In April 2007,
the Sarasota County Commission approved the maintenance dredge
construction contract with Marine Contracting Group, Inc., from
Punta Gorda, Florida. Construction began in July 2007 and was
completed in November 2007. Remediation (additional dredging)
was completed in February 2008 to address several owners
concerns.
On Dec. 16, 2008, staff received authorization from the
Sarasota County Commission to advertise a public hearing
regarding an Initial Rate Resolution to establish the assessment
methodology for the levy of non-ad valorem property assessments
to fund the completed maintenance dredge project.
The Jan. 13,
2009, public hearing was continued by the commissioners three
times to allow staff to discuss project issues and remediation
of those issues with property owners.
At a May 27,
2009 public hearing, staff presented the commission with the
initial rate resolution and estimated assessment amounts. The
commission unanimously approved the resolution. The assessments
were finalized during the September 2009 budget meetings and the
first of ten annual assessments appeared on the November 2009 tax bill.
