Project Update –
October 2009
In November
2007, county staff began to revise the Navigable Waterway
contract documents. Revisions have been
completed and construction projects are again moving forward.
In March of
2008, the Sarasota County Commission instructed staff to
complete one maintenance dredge construction project at a time.
Therefore, projects are being prioritized based on the
the age of the
project.
At a public hearing in February 2009, the
commission instructed staff that the construction projects can
be completed at a pace dictated by staff. At this time, one project has been advertised and is anticipated to
begin construction in the fall of 2009. In addition, a second
project has been advertised and bids will be opened in October
2009. The Sunaire Estil project is third on the
list and at this time staff does not have an anticipated start
date.
Early in 2008,
staff contacted a property owner regarding using the property
adjacent to the project waterway for dewatering. The owner
indicated that he may be interested in providing his property as
the final disposal site for the dredged sediment.
On Feb. 4, 2009, the Waterways Program
Manager met with staff from the Florida Department of
Environmental Protection (FDEP) to discuss this issue. FDEP
staff determined that the dredged sediment cannot be placed on
this property, therefore, the sediment will be disposed of at
the Sarasota County landfill. |
