  • 1000 - 1900: Early development in Sarasota County included Calusa tribes, Spanish explorers and other European groups.
  • 1910s: Miles of ditches were dug in upper Phillippi Creek basin for agriculture. Celery was a big crop.
  • 1950s: Urban growth accelerates and continues. Flooding problems identified along Phillippi Creek.
  • 1960s: Dredging begins at the mouth of Phillippi Creek. Southgate Community Association asks Sarasota County to act on flooding problems.
  • 1970s: First aquatic weed control begins in Phillippi Creek.
  • 1990s: Phillippi Creek Basin Master Plan initiated; septic tanks and private treatment plants identified as pollution sources there. Celery Fields Regional Stormwater Facility construction begins.
  • 2001: Phillippi Creek Septic System Replacement project begins.
  • 2003: Levee project begins.
  • 2007: Roberts Bay North Watershed Management Plan study begins.
