Sarasota County Flooding Information
FAQs about Elevation Certificates
When do I need an elevation certificate?

Click here to review a document for the answer.

How do I find out if Sarasota County has a record of my elevation certificate?

If you structure was built after the calendar year 2000 click on the link below.
Prior to 2000, please fill out a Records Retrieval Request Form and follow instructions.

Do I need an elevation certificate to purchase flood insurance policy on a pre-FIRM building?

No. However, if you have one that show the building to be at or above the BFE (Base Flood Elevation), you can get a post-FIRM actuarial rate that is lower than the rate for pre-FIRM buildings (constructed prior to Dec. 31, 1974)

The community officials are using the old elevation certificate certifying the elevation data collected and placed in the community records before Oct. 1, 2000, but the certification date being used is on or after Oct. 1, 2000. Are insurance agents allowed to use these elevation certificates?

Yes, but the community official must note on the elevation certificate that the information was collected before Oct. 1, 2000.
