Collections Sites
Hazardous Waste Collection Sites
Three permanent household collection centers are available to accept household hazardous wastes (Sarasota County residents only). No business waste is accepted. Businesses should call 941-861-5000 or visit the Project Green Sweep page for disposal information. 

NOTE: The lone collection center that accepts household hazardous wastes on Monday and Tuesday is the Central County Facility at 4010 Knights Trail Road in Nokomis.

Below are the three chemical collection sites and their operating hours.


North Sarasota County
Chemical Collection Center
8750 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota

The Bee Ridge facility (Rothenbach Park) features a ReUzIt Shop  which provides reusable materials that have been disposed off at the three county Chemical Collection Centers. These materials are free of charge.  Recycle bins and sharps containers are also available at this location. The ReUzIt shop hours are Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Closed government holidays


Central Sarasota County
Central County Solid Waste Landfill Facility  (Central County landfill)
4010 Knights Trail Road, Nokomis

Drop off Hours:
Monday-Saturday
8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Closed New Year's Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day

Recycle bins are also available at this location.


South Sarasota County
Chemical Collection Center
250 S. Jackson Road, Venice

Drop off Hours:
Wednesday - Saturday
8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Closed government holidays

Recycle bins are also available at this location.


Items accepted at the facilities include but are not limited to:

  • pool chemicals
  • automotive batteries
  • fertilizers
  • fire extinguishers
  • fluorescent lamps (and compact fluorescent lamps)
  • gasoline
  • cleaners
  • lawn and garden chemicals
  • paint thinner
  • solvents
  • rechargeable batteries
  • cell phones
  • electronics
  • sharps (needles, lancets) in proper containers ONLY
  • used motor oil
  • un-used or expired pharmaceuticals and medications 

Copiers must be taken to the North Sarasota County Chemical Collection Center at 8750 Bee Ridge Road or the Central County Citizens Convenience Center. A fee will be charged for disposal.
 

Sarasota County Sheriff Tom Knight announced the installation of permanent pharmaceutical drop boxes to give citizens the opportunity to turn in controlled substances and unused or expired prescription medications year-round.

The drop boxes are located in the lobby of the Criminal Justice Center, 2071 Ringling Blvd., Sarasota, which is open 24-hours a day, and at the south county office, 4531 State Road 776, Venice, where the lobby hours are 8 a.m.-8 p.m., and also at the North Port Police Department, 4980 City Hall Blvd., North Port, which is open 24-hours a day.

Medication turn-in is always anonymous.  Prescription and over the counter solid dosage medications such as tablets and capsules are accepted. Intra-venous solutions, injectable medication and needles are some of the items that are not allowed.
