This site consists of primarily
undeveloped lots along Warm Mineral Springs Creek within the
Warm Mineral Springs subdivision. Combined, these lots contain
approximately 36 acres. Natural habitats include scrubby
flatwoods, mesic hammocks, and various wetland riparian
habitats.
Importance
This site contains waterfront property within an area that is
rapidly becoming suburbanized. One of the largest naturally
occurring springs in southwest Florida, it provides a cold
weather refuge for up to 75 West Indian manatees. Scrubby
flatwoods on the remaining lots provide habitat for gopher
tortoises and Florida scrub-jays. Several listed plant species
occur on the site. Warm Mineral Springs Creek is one of the
largest tributaries to the Myakka River. Protecting the creek’s
water quality helps protect the water quality of the river.
Status
Protection within this site was very productive during the past
year with four more parcels acquired. Since adding this site to
the program in 2002, the County has acquired properties from 13
owners totaling 3.52 acres. This ESLPP acreage, along with a
greenway designated along the creek by the Warm Mineral Springs
plat, protects almost 10 acres of critical habitat along the
creek. Negotiations are ongoing for other lots within this site.
