The 9.3-acre site sits on the
south side of Shakett Creek just east of U.S. Highway 41 in
Nokomis. The site contains pine flatwoods on the upland areas
with mangrove fringe along the creek.
Importance
This site is waterfront property within a highly urbanized area.
Conservation of the site will provide important natural areas
for wading birds and raptors and help maintain the estuarine
environment within Shakett Creek. An active osprey nesting
platform has been installed on the site. In addition, the site
provides valuable open space and water access for residents.
Status
The County closed on two parcels totaling 7.5 acres in June
2002. A Florida Communities Trust grant was awarded for 40%
($437,972) of the acquisition costs. The Board of County
Commissioners approved Pocono Trail Preserve as the official
name for this site in September 2006. Negotiations continue
intermittently on the single parcel inholding, but no agreement
has been reached.
