Pine Notch

The 184-acre site is composed of approximately twenty parcels located south of and surrounded on three sides by the Pinelands Reserve, between the Myakka River and Interstate 75. Depressional wetlands subject to ponding six to nine months a year define most of the site. Broad sloughs, hydric hammocks, freshwater swamps and marshes are also present throughout the site.

Importance
If this site were acquired, it would fill a gap surrounded by protected land to the north, west and east. The existing site mostly contains habitats that have been degraded by hydrologic alterations and the construction of several single-family residences. However, successful hydrologic restorations have been done on the Pinelands Reserve to the north.

Status
Multiple ownerships make the acquisition of the entire site unlikely. However, it may be possible to acquire enough parcels to enhance the hydrologic restorations on the county’s Pinelands Reserve.
