The 195-acre site, including 89
acres of significant submerged land, is located on the
Intracoastal Waterway and comprised mostly of small tracts. The
Lemon Bay area generally consists of xeric and maritime hammock
and estuarine tidal swamp (mangrove) communities. Animal species
reported include the burrowing owl, Florida scrub-jay, bald
eagle, eastern indigo snake and numerous species of wading
birds. Several endangered plant species are found on the site.
Importance
This site contains some of the last remaining undeveloped bay
shorelines in the county. These lands protect the water quality
and estuary of Lemon Bay, a State Aquatic Preserve. It also
provides habitat for many wading birds and tidal species as well
as significant areas of scrub habitat.
Status
An 11-acre parcel protecting 822 feet along Lemon Bay was
acquired on March 1, 2006. To date, the county has protected six
properties totaling 53 acres in this site. A Florida Communities
Trust grant was awarded for 40% acquisition costs for two
parcels ($73,998) in February 2002.
